an easily digestible phrase that s what you might call the music of Kelly Flint As the sultry voice for the trenchant songs of David Cantor in New York City based cult faves Dave s True Story Kelly made five albums and was the toast of The New York Times the Kennedy Center and more Source Wikipedia The album has a laid back lounge feel overall although Marisa is more folksy and raw and Like a Rock exudes a kind of breathless sexual urgency The two covers include Fever on which vocalist Kelly Flint practically channels Peggy Lee and Rogers Hart s plaintiff Blue Moon Kelly Flint s alternately sultry and flirty vocals are perfectly suited to the material throughout and she literally seems to merge with the music Songwriter Dave Cantor knows how to strike just the right retro vibe and his subtle jazz guitar never overpowers the poetic emphasis of his compositions The new release features four bonus tracks including the aforementioned covers and a 2002 remix of Crazy Eyes that make it worth seeking out in lieu of the original As the latest Austin Powers film brings attention back to the groovy sounds of the 60s mainstream America may just be ready for the coo coo tunes by these steady swingers This rerelease of the self titled debut CD by the New York duo Dave s True Story BeBop Records breathes fresh life into an album that deserves a second look The 15 tracks on this quirky collection call to mind tinkling martini glasses and dimly lit lounges and make for perfect background music at your next cocktail mixer The CD kicks off with the zippy Sequined Mermaid Dress a tongue in cheek track featuring Andy Snitzer on tenor sax On the other end of the spectrum Another Hit third on the disc has a purely noir feel One could almost imagine Veronica Lake singing the number in a smoky cabaret if she ever did such things Flexible Man calls to mind the beatnik coffee houses of the 60s whereas Crazy Eyes is a kicky Latin tinged number that makes you want to shake bet that the four piece combo which performed Thurday at the Windham in Bellows Falls will fly under Ashcroft s radar for now If he listened to them at all he d hear a toe tapping throwback to the innocence of the Eisenhower years and never stop to read between the lines What would he find there you ask Well songwriter and lead guitarist Dave Cantor cites Donald Fagen as a primary influence Fagan s band Steely Dan got their name from a prop in William Burrough s novel Naked Lunch which proves there s more than one way to remember the Fifties Dave s True Story plays a jazzy brand of naughty fun with musical stylings that are smooth shimmering and slyly subversive Give me a kiss if you re looking for trouble vocalist Kelly Flint croons in Spasm I know this trick that could give you convulsions Oh Dave s True Story isn t a cool jazz version of the Plasmatics They re clever and wry and frankly their surfaces provide enjoyment enough Flint can belt out a traditional song with the same care and craft she brings to dark gems like Ned s Big Dutch Wife One of the evening s highlights a letter perfect reading of Gershwin s I ve Got a Crush On You Marisa from their recently re issued 1994 debut has a Spanish Harlem progression and like many of the evening s offering s kept Flint out front Cantor s guitar playing is bright but restrained complemented smartly by Jeff Eyrich s steady upright bass The Windham is a perfect venue for Dave s True Story It s elegant and intimate all it needs is a martini menu Over Eyrich s thumping rhythm Flint embraced the wistfulness of How Do You Break A Heart like a spurned lover imploring the eyes of each audience member as if she expected them to answer Rounding things out new drummer Rob Weiss acquitted himself well enduring Flint s gentle teasing with aplomb Though he d never played Lily 110 140 Eyrich gave him a couple of quick instructions play a rhumba then follow and he took the bouncy ode to Prozac exactly where it needed to go Cantor s songwriting not simply clever and two new selections showed his heartfelt side Duplicity is a moody lonely tune about driving down the road and chasing the white line down The World In Which We Live provides a timely take on modern life observing that the world in which we live is getting smaller all the time The band did a video for that song which will be included in a forthcoming album Jeff Eyrich said after the show that this new record is more serious more focused on Kelly s voice and has a Miles Davis Kind of Blue feel There s more production than the past two releases done for Chesky Records That label specializes in records done live in the studio Dave s True Story s last effort for them was released against their wishes they wanted to re record some sections and were rebuffed Chesky called the final product Unauthorized but the band wasn t laughing at the joke This time around there are no compromises Eyrich said The result he says is a richer sound more produced with added piano vibes sax and trumpet They did the record at Tony Bennett s studio in Englewood New Jersey It s kinder and has a few playful songs The basic tracks were completed in mid July mixing and mastering should follow soon The mood at the Windham shifted easily over the course of two sets as Flint bantered with the crowd and gently ribbed her bandmates If you haven t guessed I love to embarass people on stage she said as she tried to edge the story behind Won Gon Ju out of Cantor it s about a tailor and provided a little backstory of her own the embarassing part of the once They followed with the lively Crazy Eyes the closest thing to a hit record they ve had It was featured in Kissing Jessica Stein but left off the soundtrack because according to Flint the record company couldn t make any money off of it Though the big break has so far eluded Dave s True Story they seem pleased enough with their success so far They played the Jessica Stein premiere party and
